Smith-Wykes SS14 Pitti Preview
Smith-Wykes was one of those pleasant surprises I came across during Pitti Uomo 83, so I was looking forward to drop by and see what it had in store for next Summer. Inspired by 1960s Japan, the collection brings to life vintage japanese culture, with heavy focus on prints and patterns such as hand-carved woodblock prints, making their way onto bomber jackets, tees and crewneck sweaters. Other details, like kimono-stitchings were used on some of the label’s trademark pieces, featuring a soft color palette and resorting to lightweight fabrics such as linen, cotton and slub yarns. Continuously presenting solid, polished garments, Smith-Wykes is definitely becoming a great alternative for all those looking to step up their everyday game…
Norwegian Rain SS14 Pitti Preview
As expected, Alexander Helle and T-Michael’s upcoming creations are nothing short of mindblowing. In my opinion, the duo has been delivering some of the most unique pieces I’ve seen to date, so much so, that even with a scorching 40 degrees in Firenze, I wanted to try each of them on… Instead of (simply) updating or restyling traditional garments, such as trenches or macs, Norwegian Rain is redefining outerwear as we know it, creating unique models that merge some of the most advanced fabric technology with high-end design. Definitely one to keep under the radar.

1st PAT-RN SS14 Pitti Preview
Inspired by a 1940s picture depicting the Italian Army’s presence in Northern Africa, designer Cristiano Berto along with his brother Alessio presented yet another outstanding collection. Reinterpreting the original color palette consisting of ice-white, blue-gray and khaki, while introducing a new interior construction technique making use of lightweight raw jersey, they were able to elevate their trademark soft knit tailored jackets to a new level of sophistication.
The quality and authenticity in each of these is garments is paramount, merging a unique design method and attention to detail that surpasses the mere “replicated” feel one could expect from vintage-inspired pieces. The ability to apply tailoring techniques to these special knitted fabrics is being refined from one season to the next, making each collection a new hallmark in the life of this amazing brand.

Buttero SS14 Pitti Preview
It’s always a pleasure to meet my friends from Buttero to catch up with their latest developments. This time around, Luca and Massimiliano showed me around the SS14 collection, which besides evolutions on trademark classics such as the Tanino low and high-top, featured an array of new models. Introducing a new type of thicker rubber sole for the boat shoes and chukkas, along with new sneaker models and slippers, the result is a well balanced selection of casual/polished alternatives always maintaining that unique Buttero feel. New materials such as linen were used for the Taninos, while braided leather and supple suede were chosen for slippers, high-tops and chelsea boots. The latter by the way, are already on my wish list…
