The Belted Cardigan

A variation on the classic cardigan which follows a similar path to that of Macs and Trenches, the belted cardigan has been turning heads ever since its debut. Originally associated with heavy knit versions for the colder months, it has now evolved into lighter alternatives easily sported during Summertime. The simple introduction of the belt grants the cardigan a whole new feeling and fashionable aura, while portraying a slimmer silhouette capable of persuading the remaining few who still view it as something for their grandads.

This kimono inspired version from CAMO was probably my first purchase from the Italian brand and is also one of my favourites. Although one’s individual taste is bound to change and adapt, I think I’ve reached a point when I’m perfectly capable of defining the core elements of my individual style and its eclectic boundaries. When I first saw this cardigan I fell in love immediately, knowing however it would be closer to those boundaries…it proved me wrong. The elegant fit, superb weaving details and clean trimmings make it perfect to dress up or down, working as well over a tee as with a shirt and tie combo.

Details: navy/camel circus cardigan by CAMO, washed denim shirt by Hentsch Man, oxford cotton pants by Massimo Dutti, striped ring belt by Purificacion Garcia and crepe sole boat shoes by Buttero.

Turtleneck x Spread Collar

This is one of those love or hate combinations, especially since turtlenecks aren’t for everyone let alone paired with a popping collar. This unlikely combo basically breaks down the very essence of the turtleneck, meant to be the last visual element on the neck and usually sported with a tee underneath; in a typical italian fashion it’s just a matter of trading in the tee for a spread collar shirt. Although it’s possible to pull it off with several types of turtlenecks and shirt collars, I find this to be the more effective should you take two main “rules” into account. First, avoid sweaters which are too tight on the neck, not only will they make you feel uncomfortable but there will hardly be any space left for the shirt to show; second, pick a shirt with a soft interlining on the collar as this will allow it to gently drape over the sweater and create a curvy effect.

This looser heavy knit turtleneck sweater with ribbed detailings from CAMO has become one of my cold weather essentials and is perfect to throw on top of a dress shirt. The intricate weaving detail adds texture while the shades perfectly complement a pair of dark denim and the double breasted camel peacoat. Cognac leather boots with tweaked laces give the outfit some extra kick.

Details: double breasted wool peacoat by Our Legacy, heavy knit turtleneck by CAMO, MTO spread collar dress shirt by AGVA, jeans by H&M, cognac leather boots by Purificacion Garcia, bracelets by Viola Milano.

CAMO AW13 Preview

I’ve been closely following Stefano Ughetti’s label for some time now and for me, there’s no way around it: CAMO is one of the most appealing brands out there. Imbuing classic sartorial pieces with his unique vision, Stefano delivers a breath of fresh air to everything from suits, trousers and blazers, making them the perfect choice for everyone wanting to look sharp with a twist. His aim? Deliver quality tailored garments that people want to wear and feel comfortable in, almost like a second skin… With production taking place in Biella, Italy, the attention to detail is visible in each piece: impeccable fit, clean lines and unique weaving effects are just part of it…

Stefano is definitely a designer to look out for, so much so, that one of his suits was part of a curated selection of pieces in Angelo Flaccavento’s “Vestirse da Uomo” exhibit, showcasing 20 essential items every men should have in his wardrobe (more on that later). To top it off, both him and his staff are among the nicest people I’ve met to date.

While we’re still months away from getting our hands on this collection, that green twill suit is already on my wishlist…

Buttero AW13

It seemed only fair that Pitti’s first brand to be featured was one of my longtime favourites…The Sani family has been constantly delivering outstanding footwear with a unique handcrafted feel, earning the first place in my wardrobe with 11 pairs, so far…

For AW13 they bring us a few reinvented classics, but also step it up a notch with camouflage prints and fabric/leather combos. To top it off? How about their trademark Tanino sneaker in a premium Horween version? Drooling already…

Sunny Holidays

So it’s true that Portugal’s been going through some rough times with the crisis and all, but I believe that one of the things that keeps people going is our climate. Even if you’re broke, being able to take a walk down the seaside during a beautiful sunny day right before Christmas, is something that gets your spirits up. It definitely felt nice to strip a few layers down and roll the sleeves up while making use of seasonal fabrics. This vintage flannel button down was an instant grab due to the soft touch and bright color, a perfect winter alternative that can be worn by itself or as an overshirt. I have a thing for mixing garments with different levels of formality, taking them out of context either by breaking them down or dressing them up. The casual flannel shirt was a blank canvas for a put together look featuring a fitted denim gilet, cashmere tie, classic pocket square and dub monks…

Details: denim gilet by CAMO, vintage flannel button down, jeans and cashmere tie by Massimo Dutti, grained leather double monks by Meermin, black tortoise shades by Linda Farrow Luxe, MTO pocket square, vintage braided leather belt and watch by Daniel Wellington.
