Stamp of Approval: Carlos Santos Shoes
As much as you love clothing I believe it comes a time when for most items, a closer look at your wardrobe makes you feel that, for the time being, you’re well set. However, for me, there are a couple of pieces I just can’t seem to get enough of, be it for the desire to continuously increase the amount of possible combinations, or simply because their beauty has taken me over. In my case, I don’t think I could ever settle on the right amount of shoes…
While this is probably one of the classic controversial subjects for most married men, I must say that shoewise, I can definitely understand women. There’s something about shoes that turns them into pure works of art, especially the more you know about the process behind their construction: a handmade quality shoe is nothing shorter than art in its essence. This is why I’m (un)consciously drawn to them and constantly being surprised by new models and brands: one of my latest findings was Portugal’s very own Carlos Santos Shoes.

Established in 1942 and named after its mentor, Carlos Santos has been delivering luxury footwear for men ever since. Combining the finest high grade materials with years of experience and know how, along with an ever-growing desire to surpass customers’ (and their own) expectations, it has grown to be one of the most renowned portuguese shoemakers. Its goal? Deliver the finest luxury footwear, making use of state-of-the-art techniques, all without straying from its roots and core universe. Based of the values of perfection, craftsmanship, tradition and timelessness, Carlos Santos is the perfect example of Portuguese shoemaking excellence, with over 70 years of experience resulting in unique pieces that develop a strong emotional connection with those who wear them. For all this it receives Beyond Fabric’s stamp of approval!

Here’s a small glimpse into its world through the Spring/Summer lookbook.

Stamp of Approval - Hixsept
When you’re passionate about a subject, an overwhelming urge to know every little thing about it is likely to take over you. Although such a level of knowledge is ultimately unachievable, the search often proves valuable and fulfilling. I try to make the most of my virtually non-existent free time, reading and researching several menswear related topics; one of the things I often come across are new, emerging labels.
It’s always exciting to see the kind of fresh, original interpretations new labels have on fashion, even if I tend to stay loyal to the ones I have a special connection to. However, every now and then, I have to let my guard down and surrender to the offerings of some of the brands out there. One such case is Hixsept.
Created by French duo Aurélien Arbet and Jérémie Egry, the brand reflects their rich background in arts and design, by combining elements of re-interpreted minimalism with color blocking and interesting use of fabric combinations. Although they’ve been around for a while now, their latest collections really put them on the radar, earning them much deserved recognition from media and peers alike. Aiming at reinventing themselves in each collection, they consistently present colorful, vibrant and refreshing items every season, combining great fit and craftsmanship with an affordable price tag. Moreover, they might just produce the best lookbooks out there…
For providing a unique approach to menswear, Hixsept receives Beyond Fabric’s Stamp of Approval.

If you follow menswear blogs or sites, chances are that you have come upon the name Our Legacy. This swedish brand (surprise anyone?) is quickly becoming one the “must haves” of the season, thanks to their unique take on timeless classics. Instead of going for crazy-over-the-top designs, Our Legacy bet is on impecable quality and fit. I recently purchased a couple of oxford button downs, and take my word for it…once you try them on, these swedes will earn a soft spot in your heart.

As it has been happening with many other high-end brands, all products are manufactured right here in Portugal, so besides purchasing great clothes you’ll be supporting Portuguese craftsmanship.
Also, be sure to check other pieces such as the knotted cotton blazer, chinos, shorts and shirts: http://www.porvocacao.com/porvocacao/2010/05/.
You can find Our Legacy at Por Vocação and their official website: www.ourlegacy.se (they ship to Portugal).
