The Belted Cardigan

A variation on the classic cardigan which follows a similar path to that of Macs and Trenches, the belted cardigan has been turning heads ever since its debut. Originally associated with heavy knit versions for the colder months, it has now evolved into lighter alternatives easily sported during Summertime. The simple introduction of the belt grants the cardigan a whole new feeling and fashionable aura, while portraying a slimmer silhouette capable of persuading the remaining few who still view it as something for their grandads.

This kimono inspired version from CAMO was probably my first purchase from the Italian brand and is also one of my favourites. Although one’s individual taste is bound to change and adapt, I think I’ve reached a point when I’m perfectly capable of defining the core elements of my individual style and its eclectic boundaries. When I first saw this cardigan I fell in love immediately, knowing however it would be closer to those boundaries…it proved me wrong. The elegant fit, superb weaving details and clean trimmings make it perfect to dress up or down, working as well over a tee as with a shirt and tie combo.

Details: navy/camel circus cardigan by CAMO, washed denim shirt by Hentsch Man, oxford cotton pants by Massimo Dutti, striped ring belt by Purificacion Garcia and crepe sole boat shoes by Buttero.

Beyond Fabric x Purificacion Garcia #3

Sunshine sets the motto for brighter, bolder shades to bring that extra kick into your attire. What initially began as small details through colorful accessories, soon evolved into shirts, jackets and last but not least, bottoms. Even with a vast color palette at our disposal, purple is definitely not the first that comes to mind when choosing the so called “go to hell” pants; nonetheless, as soon as I spotted these jeans I just knew I had to incorporate them into a look…

The unusual shade is actually quite versatile allowing for beautiful combinations with both lighter and darker garments, such as the navy heavy knit shawl collar cardigan with duffle fastening and the pale blue gingham shirt. The floral print tie carries on the playful nature of the outfit which is then anchored by brown suede chukkas with contrasting neon orange laces.

Beyond Fabric x Purificacion Garcia #2

The second look I put together for Purificacion Garcia revolved around one of the Spring/Summer essentials: white denim. Although I’m often seen sporting them during Winter as well, there’s something that just feels right about throwing on a pair of white jeans on a sunshiny day. Being neutral you can pretty much pair pair them with anything you want (just be careful with going full white), so here I went with a variation on the navy blazer in a beautiful lighter shade of blue. The summery pale blue gingham shirt sets the perfect background for a bold striped tie, bringing pattern into the mix, while lightweight micro-sole taupe suede longwings pick on the caramel shades of the jacket buttons and go perfect “sans socks”.

Turtleneck x Spread Collar

This is one of those love or hate combinations, especially since turtlenecks aren’t for everyone let alone paired with a popping collar. This unlikely combo basically breaks down the very essence of the turtleneck, meant to be the last visual element on the neck and usually sported with a tee underneath; in a typical italian fashion it’s just a matter of trading in the tee for a spread collar shirt. Although it’s possible to pull it off with several types of turtlenecks and shirt collars, I find this to be the more effective should you take two main “rules” into account. First, avoid sweaters which are too tight on the neck, not only will they make you feel uncomfortable but there will hardly be any space left for the shirt to show; second, pick a shirt with a soft interlining on the collar as this will allow it to gently drape over the sweater and create a curvy effect.

This looser heavy knit turtleneck sweater with ribbed detailings from CAMO has become one of my cold weather essentials and is perfect to throw on top of a dress shirt. The intricate weaving detail adds texture while the shades perfectly complement a pair of dark denim and the double breasted camel peacoat. Cognac leather boots with tweaked laces give the outfit some extra kick.

Details: double breasted wool peacoat by Our Legacy, heavy knit turtleneck by CAMO, MTO spread collar dress shirt by AGVA, jeans by H&M, cognac leather boots by Purificacion Garcia, bracelets by Viola Milano.

Beyond Fabric x Purificacion Garcia #1

Following my previous introduction to its SS13 collection, I got a chance to style some looks for Purificacion Garcia using my favourite pieces for the season.

Starting with what might just be my first choice among all the garments in the collection, and one of the season’s essentials, this suede bomber jacket instantly earned its way to the top spots of my wishlist. The beautiful taupe shade with chambray lining and orange/burgundy highlights on the pockets and zippers, set the mood for the whole look. A contrasting pale blue crewneck sweater underneath, dark denim with contrast orange stitching and supple suede boots pick up the chromatic and texture themes. The stripped knit tie adds a dash of color and pattern to the mix..

Store Info: Purificacion Garcia

There are some brands who despite their international approach and presence, still remain unmistakably linked to their unique charismatic origins. There’s no doubt cultural and historical background play a huge role in the way people dress, take for instance the preppy inheritance reflected by American brands such as Ralph Lauren or Gant. There’s something appealing to me in brands that are able to reproduce this cultural aspect and one of my favourites in this field is Purificacion Garcia.

If you’ve been following me for a while you might’ve come across several items from the Spanish brand incorporated into my looks. It’s ability to constantly deliver an unexpected take on classics with a bold, playful attitude resembling that of Spaniards themselves, is visible through the attention paid to details in every single garment. Besides its discreet contrasting color square logo, most items feature lots of color and small tweaks such as different color threads on each button, colored buttonholes or contrasting fabrics in the most unexpected places. Unique, updated, fun and versatile is how I would describe Purificacion Garcia.

With pieces including different ranges from classic 3 piece suits, up to washed polo shirts, business and casual shirts and an array of knitwear alternatives, this is one of those few brands where you could actually build a solid wardrobe covering the entire spectrum of your daily needs and social agenda: be it black tie events or a relaxing day at the beach. Heavily marked by the use of color and attention to fit, while featuring a unique spicy aesthetic between Spanish and Italian styling, this is definitely a brand to keep an eye out for.

I’ve had the chance to work with them in styling some looks from their SS13 collection, so stay tuned for future posts!

Birthday’s Attire

Even if getting older isn’t necessarily a bad thing, a lot of people hate celebrating their birthday…I, on the other hand, make it a point to have the day off to do the things and be with the people I love, but to each his own. Also, I’m usually in the mood to debut new garments on the occasion.

This time around, it all revolved around green, one of my favourite shades and unfortunately, one of the most underrated out there. There’s a reason Boglioli is considered by many the epitome of Italian suiting, you need only take a look at the blazer to recognized its traits: washed finishing, unstructured, lightweight, fitted and featuring a superb herringbone pattern. One of the most interesting things about this look, besides the color and texture schemes, is the fact that despite each of the most striking pieces: suit, vest and tie were bought separately, they all matched perfectly in the end.

Details: herringbone cotton/silk suit by Boglioli, houndstooth tweed vest by Purificacion Garcia, dress Shirt by René Lezard, waxed derby shoes by Buttero, Shades by Linda Farrow Luxe, striped tie by Purificacion Garcia, houndstooth pocket square by Tie Rack.

The Over-Polo Shirt

I’ve always seen polo shirts as the perfect tee alternative come Summer time, when you want to look a bit more put together but still exuding a casual and relaxed mood. The long sleeve polo just didn’t do it for me; I couldn’t quite figure why wear them instead of an outstanding pullover or knit. Well, as life often proves us wrong, here’s yet another example of a garment I couldn’t picture myself wearing and has now become one of my favourites…

This “Over-Polo” is not your average long sleeve polo shirt with a 3 button closure: Massimo Dutti clearly took these up a notch adding a zip closure perfect to show just the right amount of your shirt and tie combo, as well as a tab button closure should the wind catch you off-guard. Coming in a beautiful hunter green shade with contrasting brown suede detailing on the zip and tab, it’s just a matter of choosing the right complements to pull it off…

Details: safari jacket by Purificacion Garcia, long sleeve polo shirt by Massimo Dutti, snow wash oxford button down by Our Legacy, MTM 110s worsted wool slacks by Gentleman Tailors, camo boat shoes by Asos, MTO tartan tie, braided leather bracelet by Add On and watch by Rolex.
