Déjà Vu?

Finding that perfect piece you’ve been longing for is becoming an ever increasing task and might pose more of a challenge than it seems. Be it fit, cut, fabric or color, there are a number of variables which may be off putting and dictate whether or not you’ll end up purchasing a garment. Sometimes the thrill of the chase makes it all the more special once you find it, whereas other times it might prove to be exasperating.

As such, one of the things I tend to do besides carefully selecting my purchases, is to stock up once I come across special pieces I really love. Instead of settling for “so so” items, I’d rather save and invest in two or three versions of an item I know I’ll be sporting often. Found a perfect fitting shirt or sweater? Get it in two colorways or even the same if it’s an everyday essential, or play around with sizing, going for a fitted version and a looser one for layering purposes.

Although this may not apply to every type of garment, be it due to monetary reasons or simply because it doesn’t make sense to have more than one of certain items, you’ll be surprised by how well it works in comprising a suitable wardrobe. I, for one, have done this for sweaters, jeans, shirts and even shoes that match my styling philosophy. As I see it, it’s better to ease up on variety and stock up on heavy rotation items. Plus, the feeling of wearing something you love added to different shades or sizes, fools not only other people’s perception but your own as well, so you won’t feel as if wearing the same outfit over and over…

Top to bottom (clockwise):

- Levi’s 511 slim, Rugby wadham club collar shirt (blue and pink), Buttero for Por Vocação derby shoes (taupe and waxed brown), Buttero crepe soled boat shoes (black and brown), Paul Smith Ibsen trainer (off white leather and brown suede), Our Legacy Great Sweat (garden green, washed red and indigo blue), Lyle and Scott deep v-neck sweater (blue and black), H&M cotton cardigan (ecru and orange) and Our Legacy oxford candystripe button down shirt (blue and pink).

Ethnic Pattern Mix

If you’re acquainted with Our Legacy’s latest creations you’ve certainly recognized this Ethnic Arrow Shirt from their AW11 collection. Although it’s most definitely one of their strongest pieces to date, it’s also a challenge to mix and match, due to the tablecloth fabric and iconic print. Here I used it as an overshirt and inverted the usual layering order, throwing a solid v-neck cashmere sweater underneath it. Keeping up the patterned theme, the fair isle socks add an amazing twist to the whole look, imbuing the slate grey creased trousers with a new found life.

Details: ethnic arrow shirt by Our Legacy, cashmere v-neck sweater by Massimo Dutti, crewneck tee by Levi’s, creased trousers by Boglioli, fair isle wool socks by H&M, two-toned suede boat shoes by Buttero, bracelet by street vendor and watch by Gucci.

Denim on Denim x 3

Much has been said about the volatile art of wearing denim on denim, especially since the god awful image of the so called “denim tuxedo” is printed on everyone’s mind for the worst possible reasons. Thankfully, we’ve come a long way since then, and the most common combo has become pairing a lighter wash denim shirt with darker jeans of the same color, or vice-versa. However, when mixing denim based garments you should not be restricted either by the traditional blue shades or the usual items: combining different colors or unexpected elements such as chambray pocket squares or ties is a great way to go. Here I went with two different shades of blue on top of contrasting white jeans to achieve a consistent look, which despite being comprised by three denim pieces, still manages not to be overwhelming…

Details: medium wash trucker jacket by Levi’s, dark denim button down shirt by Our Legacy, white jeans by Massimo Dutti, 9 eyelet leather boots by Buttero, vintage plaid tie (Lochcarron of Scotland), tie bar by The Tie Rack, vintage braided leather belt and Rolex GMT Master II.

This is one of my favourite cold weather blazers. As I mentioned earlier tweed is here to stay, so you might as well make the most out of it. This vintage Harry’s Tweed was quite the find at London’s Portobello Market and after some tailoring by my friend Ayres it’s been on heavy rotation lately. Being so warm makes it perfect for layering with v-necks or cardigans such as this double breasted version. Striped oxford button down, club tie and some camel highlights on the accessories to add some visual appeal and you’re all set…

Harry’s Tweed 3 button blazer (vintage), double breasted merino wool cardigan by Purificacion Garcia, candy stripe oxford button down by Our Legacy, jeans by Levi’s (511 slim), club tie by Gentleman, braided leather belt by Acne and leather gloves by H&M.

Cut me some slack…

The widespread concept that dressing up is uncomfortable couldn’t be further from the truth. However, it seems to have become the number one excuse for people to cruise around town in sweatpants and running shoes, especially during the weekend. Don’t get me wrong, but if most of us are “sartorially restrained” by a work imposed etiquette five days a week, one would expect that on the remaining two, people would want to look their best. Want sweatpants’ comfort? Stay in and enjoy your couch.

As I see it, looking good is essential to make you feel good and thus make the most of your free time! And that can be easily achieved with a V-neck sweater, crewneck tee, grey slacks and sneakers…What’s uncomfortable about that?

Fit details: cotton v-neck sweater by Purificacion Garcia, crewneck tee by Levi’s, wool slacks by Gentleman, Ibsen sneakers by Paul Smith, cashmere/wool cap by Ralph Lauren, Wayfarer sunglasses by Ray Ban, bracelet by street vendor and watch by Rolex GMT Master II

A classic trenchcoat is one of the most essential and timeless pieces you can add to your collection. Although it’s perfect to top a suit or more formal attires, incorporating it into more relaxed looks to achieve a thoughtful balance is also a great way to sport it. Besides that elegant/relaxed mix what I love about this is how so many different complementing colors blend in for a perfect outcome: the plaid on the shirt, denim on the jacket, brown scarf, charcoal jeans and tan topcoat.

Trench by Paul Smith, plaid linen shirt by Boglioli, denim jacket by Levi’s, jeans by H&M (drain), cap toe oxford shoes by Paul Smith, floral patterned scarf by Épice, leather gloves by Casa das Peles and patterned socks by H&M.
