Linen on Linen

What I believe to be one of the most underrated and misunderstood fabrics, is undoubtedly one of my personal favourites. I won’t deny I have a passion for heavier textured winter fabrics as well, but there’s something unique to linen that makes me passionate about it. The ultimate Summer choice, this lightweight crinkled fabric is perfect to pull off intricate looks in the blistering heat, due to its breathability and unique fibers: and here is where opinions divide… Linen will always have a characteristic feel and crinkled look after wearing, which many consider rough and too relaxed or sloppy - for me, that’s just the beauty of it.

The unique charisma of a slightly wrinkled linen suit perfectly paired with horsebit loafers and unbuttoned shirt, it’s a hard one to match. Especially since nowadays ecru has given place to brighter shades and bolder patterns, allowing for endless possibilities of (un)polished elegance… As with all fabrics, quality linen comes at a price but there are a few affordable alternatives out there worth taking a look at, especially Zara: the Spanish giant produces not only some of the most original pieces but also with quite surprising quality. Both the vest and trousers feature a soft feel with just the right amount of roughness and stiffness to ensure a great fit (with some minor adjustments and tailoring of course). The intricately detailed vest pairs beautifully with the camo boat shoes while the rest of the look is toned down by a white dress shirt and navy pants.

The Over-Polo Shirt

I’ve always seen polo shirts as the perfect tee alternative come Summer time, when you want to look a bit more put together but still exuding a casual and relaxed mood. The long sleeve polo just didn’t do it for me; I couldn’t quite figure why wear them instead of an outstanding pullover or knit. Well, as life often proves us wrong, here’s yet another example of a garment I couldn’t picture myself wearing and has now become one of my favourites…

This “Over-Polo” is not your average long sleeve polo shirt with a 3 button closure: Massimo Dutti clearly took these up a notch adding a zip closure perfect to show just the right amount of your shirt and tie combo, as well as a tab button closure should the wind catch you off-guard. Coming in a beautiful hunter green shade with contrasting brown suede detailing on the zip and tab, it’s just a matter of choosing the right complements to pull it off…

Camo Shorts

The thing with camo is that pulling it off is not as easy as it seems: besides the wide array of pattern and color variations, you still need to incorporate it in an intelligent fashion to make it sophisticated. Apart from the obvious choice of garment or accessory, which bears a huge impact when it comes to scale, you should consider the types of camo available (woodland, digital, etc) and see which works best for you.

These woodland camo shorts are a nice twist on traditional Summery alternatives and I love breaking the whole military theme by adding more classic items, such as a dress shirt, sports jacket and tasseled loafers. In the end, this eclectic mix is what makes the whole look visual appealing…

Going Sockless: Essentials

As the weather allows it and sunny days become more frequent, so does the amount of exposed ankles cruising the streets: boat shoes, espadrilles, loafers and even wingtips can’t seem to avoid bare feet in all their naked glory once the temperature rises. Lets face it: there’s more about going sockless than its unique visual appeal, it’s a statement, and one that apparently is here to stay…

However, it’s not all rainbows and butterflies in “no socks land” as there are a couple of downsides to be taken into account, especially when it comes to preserving your precious footwear. Walking around sans socks for a whole day puts a great deal of stress on your shoes, since they absorb your sweat which besides attracting odor-causing bacteria also degrades those sweet looking uppers. Hence, in order to minimize these potentially harmful side effects while maintaining the stylish component, you have two choices:

a) You open heartedly embrace your sock-free nature and should invest in cedar shoe trees along with a shoe deodorant and/or bacteria-free insoles. Make sure you leave the shoe trees in for at least 24h and rotate your footwear so you don’t wear the same pair twice in a row (this goes for a general rule of thumb);

b) You go proactive and purchase the so called “invisible” socks, allowing you to create the illusion of going sockless while preserving the life span of your shoes;

While I must say invisible socks do it for me, feel free to go either way. Also, and even if you’d rather sport colorful ankles than bare ones, do consider investing in shoe trees, I can’t stress it enough…

Beyond Fabric suggests…

This time around, inspired by the days off I’m currently enjoying, I’ve decided to put together a more beachy look. When it comes to warm weather attire, shorts are one of the most controversial items: “purists” discard them on behalf of lightweight linen or tropical wool trousers, whereas many consider them a Summer essential. I for one, believe shorts are a great alternative when the temperature rises, given that you pay as much attention to fit as you should would with any other item.

These creased military green cotton cargo shorts by Ovadia & Sons are some of the best out there: fitted, breathable and overall stunning. Pair them with a slim fitting polo shirt, the perfect alternative to take a rest from shirts but still present a more polished look than with a simple tee. To face those late chilly afternoons and add a splash of color to the mix, it doesn’t get much better than this orange cotton v-neck sweater by Purificacion Garcia. Ditch the flip flops for a pair of canvas espadrilles, put your Clubmasters on and don’t forget to pack your towel and sunscreen in your canvas tote.

Navy Boat Espadrilles - € 25.64 @ Asos

Striped Shopper - € 19.95 @ Zara

Ray Ban Clubmaster -  (approx.) € 103.00 @ Ray Ban

Back to black

2010 was undoubtedly a pattern filled year…plaids were everywhere to be found and quickly became one of the “must haves” of the season. Coming in all types of scales, shapes and colors, there was one particular pattern that stood above all else, thus reenforcing its place as one of the most sought, beautiful and timeless of the bunch: Blackwatch.

Originating from one of Scotland’s most famous regiments, this tricolored tartan bearing the shades of blue, black and green, is thought to have been primarily used for hunting purposes due to its subdued nature. Its timeless character and overall allure have made it into one of fashion’s most beloved plaids. Exuding a unique sense of class and elegance, it’s an amazing addition to any wardrobe, adding color in an understated way and being easily paired with other pieces. The only downside is deciding which item to get, given the amount of offerings out there…
