Turtleneck x Spread Collar

This is one of those love or hate combinations, especially since turtlenecks aren’t for everyone let alone paired with a popping collar. This unlikely combo basically breaks down the very essence of the turtleneck, meant to be the last visual element on the neck and usually sported with a tee underneath; in a typical italian fashion it’s just a matter of trading in the tee for a spread collar shirt. Although it’s possible to pull it off with several types of turtlenecks and shirt collars, I find this to be the more effective should you take two main “rules” into account. First, avoid sweaters which are too tight on the neck, not only will they make you feel uncomfortable but there will hardly be any space left for the shirt to show; second, pick a shirt with a soft interlining on the collar as this will allow it to gently drape over the sweater and create a curvy effect.

This looser heavy knit turtleneck sweater with ribbed detailings from CAMO has become one of my cold weather essentials and is perfect to throw on top of a dress shirt. The intricate weaving detail adds texture while the shades perfectly complement a pair of dark denim and the double breasted camel peacoat. Cognac leather boots with tweaked laces give the outfit some extra kick.

Details: double breasted wool peacoat by Our Legacy, heavy knit turtleneck by CAMO, MTO spread collar dress shirt by AGVA, jeans by H&M, cognac leather boots by Purificacion Garcia, bracelets by Viola Milano.

Demystifying the vest

When it comes to vests, it’s a thin line that which sets them as classic menswear staples and apart from a waiter’s uniform. What was once an unmistakable presence in the wardrobe of any so called gentleman, has in time, become associated mostly with highly formal occasions or the downgrading common ground of working attire. Thankfully, the recent sartorial influences in menswear have been slowly bringing back this iconic piece, mainly through the growing popularity of the 3 piece suit. With more and more young men sporting suits as means of self expression instead of wearing them solely to the office, the suit breakdown has allowed vests to breathe and once again take their rightful place in men’s fashion.

The truth is the vest is one of the most versatile pieces in your wardrobe: wear it as the third piece in a suit for timeless elegance, pair it with slacks for a put together look or by itself with a shirt and denim for an unusual twist. This speckled vest was a 2£ find at a London vintage shop and although not being part of a suit, it’s a great way to add a polished feel to a look. Here I paired it with more relaxed elements such as chinos and boat shoes while keeping it sharp with a spread collar shirt and paisley pocket square. Love how the complementing shades on the bracelets, pocket square, watch and chinos all come together for visual coherence.

Brand Feature: Agva

A couple of days ago I was contacted by my friend Álvaro, founder of portuguese bespoke menswear brand Agva, to check a few of his recent pieces before he delivered them to clients. Bet on creating unique items according to the client’s specifications, nothing is overlooked during the manufacturing process which takes place entirely in Portugal. Having nothing short of perfection in mind, their offerings range from shirts to full suits and even shoes. The final pieces I had access to included several shirt models and a 2 button blazer with an outstanding attention to detail. Here’s one of my favourites, more to come…
